Peacock Keller Celebrates its Sixth Annual Off The Shelf...A Celebration of Books

Peacock Keller hosted its Sixth Annual Off The Shelf…A Celebration of Books on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, attracting 250 guests to the Hilton Garden Inn, Southpointe.

We began this event as a way to help the Washington District Libraries to reach a technology goal of establishing a one-card regional network throughout their District which now includes Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties. Funds raised at Off The Shelf provided the monetary match for a successful $250,000 Washington County Local Share Grant received in 2012. The Grant enabled the remaining 12 Washington County libraries to join the WAGGIN consortium.

This year’s Off The Shelf raised $30,000, totaling over $160,000 raised over the past six years. This will allow the libraries’ consortium to pay for future maintenance and software upgrades to keep the network running smoothly.

This year we invited people to stretch their imagination with a “Travel” theme and we were not disappointed. Attendees featured books on popular vacation destinations, such as Hawaii and Paris; and classic stories, such as The Time Machine and Around the World in 80 Days.

Our award winners were:

  • First Place Award (Pulitzer Prize) - Graham/Amrhein, whose table theme was The African Queen.
  • Second Place Award (Best Seller) - Washington District Library, whose book was How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World.
  • Third Place Award (Sleeper) - Fredericktown Area Library, whose book was The World of David the Gnome.
  • People’s Choice Award went to the Washington County Bar Association for their table Dragonology, The Complete Book of Dragon (ologies) and The Treasures of China: The Glories of the Kingdom of the Dragon.

Along with the amazing creativity of our participants, guests enjoyed a great dinner, the music of The Dan Baker Group, auction items and an entertaining presentation from Keith Bellows, Editor-In-Chief of National Geographic Traveler.

Peacock Keller would like to thank everyone who participated in and attended Off The Shelf. We hope that you’ll be able to join us again next year for our theme of “Food.” For more information, please call us at 724-222-4520.
